I remember when the first Monsters movie came out (it was Monsters Inc. in 2001) and how I loved it right from the start. Both Monsters Inc. and Monsters University have an interesting framework about leadership and this week we will talk about it from a personal context.
Mike Wazowski is a very disciplined person. His whole goal is to become a top Scarer, but he has many challenges. Mike is very persistent and is dedicated to preparation, studying and strategy. His success is not because he has natural talent but instead due to his effort and belief in his capabilities.

Sulley on the other hand has a natural talent in his scaring skills. He, however, must be humble and collaborate with Mike. What Sulley gains is that to succeed he must work with Mike and develop empathy for others.

The difference between Mike and Sulley leads us to two leadership insights. First that leaders must embrace sustained effort and resilience to both team and personal advancement. And that recognizing your strengths while staying humble enables mentorship and collaboration.

Also, for both characters, the decision to protect Boo showcases courage and moral leadership, emphasizing responsibility beyond metrics like performance outcomes.

The final lesson between Mike and Sulley is that leadership is relational. Sulley and Mike’s growing friendship illustrates the importance of empathy, trust, and mutual support in achieving collective goals.
