I found out recently about a situation that happened to a friend of mine. Have you ever had someone put in writing negative comments about you? Should we put in writing things about other women and then share them with others? Is doing that truly “constructive criticism” or just plain mean?
When we put negative comments about others in writing, it may lack the context that verbal communication can provide and lead to hurt feelings. It also makes it seem like a personal attack as opposed to true constructive feedback. When negative comments are “normalized”, it is harmful to individuals involved and can affect the overall culture of an organization and making it a toxic environment.
It is also crucial to differentiate between constructive criticism and mean-spirited remarks. Constructive criticism aims to help someone improve and is delivered with respect and care. In contrast, mean comments often serve to belittle or undermine someone without offering any real guidance for improvement. The intent behind the feedback is what truly matters.
If these types of things are happening in an organization, it may mean that the organization is more concerned with maintaining a facade than addressing genuine issues. By sharing these experiences, you can empower others to speak up.
We all know that constructive feedback and open communication are vital for growth, but you want to truly be focused on feedback and make sure to prioritize respect.
