Merida is a spirited and independent young princess known for her fiery personality and equally fiery, wild curly red hair. Hmmm…sounds like me expect for the princess part 😊 Merida values freedom and adventure over tradition (a lesson to be learned there as well)! Merida’s courage and wit often lead her into daring challenges—and help her find her own path in life.
One of the first leadership lessons we see in Merida is when her dad, Fergus, gives her a bow more suited to her size than the oversize bow that Merida picks up. This reminds us to find the right leadership fit for our team. We need to match the skills and abilities to the individuals instead of forcing them into a role that they may not be ready for.
Merida’s mom, Queen Elinor, has preconceived notions that Merida must remain bound to the traditions that have always been in place. Elinor, however, does learn to break these preconceived notions and recognize that leadership means that often we need to redefine what is possible. As leaders we need to be open to change when the rules no longer serve us.
Brave truly teaches us that strong leadership is about empowering people to lead in a way that suits them, challenge outdated rules and help foster courage through trust and support. A true leader will inspire others to step up in their own way!
