Up is one of the saddest Pixar films in my opinion. Carl is a man who has lost his sense of direction after his wife Ellie’s death. As is somewhat typical when we get older, he is somewhat rigid and self-centered. Carl’s entire dream is to travel to Paradise Falls.
However, when Russell accidentally gets included on his journey, Carl must confront new responsibilities, adapt to unfamiliar situations, and care for someone who depends on him. In really looking at Russell, Carl finds a younger version of himself. Carl also recognizes many shared values with Russell that include respect for nature and kindness to animals.
As Carl and Russell move forward in the film, their perception of each other changes. In fact, Carl shows how leadership can be defined by both passion and integrity. Carl evolves over the course of the film in that he is no longer a solitary person but instead a collaborator. He learns to trust and rely on Russell to achieve their shared goals.
Up teaches us that true leadership is not just about achieving your personal goals but about connecting with others, adapting to new challenges and leading with empathy. Sometimes unexpected relationships are the ones that transform us!
