I want to start off this series talking about the one that started it all, Toy Story. There are so many themes in Toy Story but let’s talk this week about Buzz vs. Woody. Who is your favorite and why?

I love Woody as he is symbolic of the part of us that wants to stay the same. Woody is the long time favorite and is tied to Andy’s past. He fears becoming obsolete and being left behind which results in jealousy of Buzz. But Woody ultimately shows his leadership skills with care, and he learns to lead the group without being controlling.

Buzz on the other hand, must confront the truth in order to grow. Buzz truly thinks he is a Space Ranger and reflects how sometimes we have to tell ourselves a story to feel important. He is flashy with his lights and wings, but when he can’t fly, he crashes right into reality.

So how does this relate to us? It relates to leadership, especially when who we think we are and who we actually are results in tension. The inner work we must do as leaders when our identity, role, or environment shifts. We often must integrate two essential leadership energies: the grounded and the aspirational.
As leaders, we need to:
• Make both bold and grounded decisions
• Balance stability with innovation
• Stay humble without losing confidence
• Adapt to situations without affecting core values
• Build teams where strengths complement rather than compete
