We all want to be liked; it is truly a fundamental aspect of human nature.  The need to be liked is deeply rooted in our evolutionary history and social psychology.  But why do we crave approval from others?  Why do we need social acceptance?

Social connection is one of the biggest reasons since we are social beings.  We thrive on connection with others and have a sense of belonging.  Connection is vital for our emotional well-being and can impact on our mental health.

Self-worth is also a big part of our self-identity.  We are influenced by how others perceive us and when we get their approval, it reinforces our sense of identity and value.  And disapproval can lead to self-doubt and even make us question our worth.

Being liked can enhance our social status.  Having others approve of us can translate to influence and prestige.  And conversely when someone doesn’t approve of us, it can lead us to seek their approval.  However, that can also drive us to care about the opinions of those we don’t respect.   And the fear of being disliked can lead to anxiety and stress which can drive us to sacrifice our own needs and values to gain approval.

So next time you are worried about whether someone “likes” you, make sure you are being authentic and recognizing if your desire to be liked is overshadowing your true self!
