The Owl is a significant figure in ancient Greek culture as it relates to wisdom and knowledge.  The Owl is also closely linked to Athena who is the goddess of wisdom, warfare and crafts.  I don’t know about you, but I’ve always wanted to be a goddess, and I would really have to think about what my symbolic figure would be (but that is another conversation)!

Athena often used the owl as her companion in art and literature which symbolized her intelligence and strategic thinking.  The owl also is often seen as a protector and guide along with prophetic abilities, which links them to the divine and the supernatural.  The owl’s significance encompasses so many themes, including knowledge, learning, pursuit of truth, wisdom and protection.

But why is this important to us?  I think that the significance of Athena and the Owl in today’s world is shown through our empowerment and intelligence.  Women show up more in leadership roles, which echoes Athena’s attributes.  The emphasis on advocacy of women’s rights aligns with the wisdom of the owl.  The owl and Athena also symbolize the fight for gender equality and the recognition of women’s contributions.

It is an amazing to think about how we can bring the thoughts of women in Ancient Greece to women today!
