For this week’s newsletter, I will continue talking about some of the biggest things that Dolly Parton can teach us using some of her best quotes. This week we will talk about being yourself. I talk all the time about authenticity, and this is the power in knowing you are and not apologizing for it!
In your professional world there are many who feel that pressure to fit into the “mold” and authenticity can feel risky. But to make the strongest impression, don’t try the hardest to look perfect but instead show up with clarity, confidence, humor, and a genuine sense of self.
“People say, ‘How do you stay looking so young?’ I say, well, good lighting, good doctors, and good makeup.”
Dolly Parton could laugh at herself without diminishing herself. This is more than a quick with but instead is self-awareness. When we are comfortable with ourselves, we create space for others to be honest too. Authenticity does not require sharing every detail of our lives, but it does mean refusing to pretend that success, confidence, or growth happens effortlessly.
“I’m not offended by dumb blonde jokes because I know that I’m not dumb. I also know that I’m not a blonde.”
When we have a clear view of ourselves, the labels that others place on us lose some of their power. We do not need to make the opinions of others become our identity. Instead, we can distinguish between information that helps us grow and assumptions that were never ours to carry.
“You’d be surprised how much it costs to look this cheap!”
Underneath Dolly’s humor is the truth about your personal brand…and that is that authenticity can still be intentional. Being yourself means choosing how you present yourself in a way that reflects your values, strengths, and personality. Your goal is not to make your image what you think others will approve of but instead to align what people see with who you genuinely are.
“It’s hard to be a diamond in a rhinestone world.”
Standing out can be uncomfortable. New ideas, unconventional careers, different communication styles, and unexpected perspectives can challenge the status quo. Your differences with others are not a defect but instead is a quality that allows you to see a solution no one else has noticed.
“A rhinestone shines just as good as a diamond.”
Our value is not limited to one thing we have done, nor do we need the biggest platform to contribute something meaningful. A healthy team recognizes that different people shine in different ways—and that brilliance is not a scarce resource.
“I think everybody should be allowed to be who they are, and to love who they love.”
Authentic leadership is not only about having the courage to be ourselves but also about creating room for others to do the same. Belonging grows when people do not have to spend their energy hiding, editing, or defending who they are. When colleagues feel respected, they can focus more fully on collaborating, creating and solving problems.
Dolly always talked about the magic inside us. We may have mentors and experience, but eventually we must trust ourselves enough to decide. Our confidence will grow after we speak up, take the project, launch the idea or set the boundary. You need to be yourself and that means bringing your strengths, communicating clearly and with integrity and letting your values guide your choices.
One final thought is that you don’t need to be someone else. You have the experience, the perspective, the humor, the idea, and the way to help others already. Don’t try to be someone else or fit into someone else’s mold, instead discover who you are and let it shine like the diamond or the rhinestone!
