Can you believe that Cars is 20 years old?  It was produced by Pixar in 2006 and follows Lightning McQueen, a brash and ambitious rookie race car who wants to win the Piston Cup.  On his way to a race in California, he gets stranded in the small and forgotten town of Radiator Springs on Route 66.

During his time in Radiator Springs, he meets Doc Hudson (a former racing champion), Sally Carrera (whose dream is to revive Radiator Springs) and Tow Mater (a rusty tow truck).  When Lightning damages the main road in Radiator Springs and doesn’t fix it properly, Doc challenges him to a race on a dirt track.  Lightning loses and must fix the road and ultimately ends up befriending the others.

Doc Hudson becomes his mentor and shows that his wisdom and past experience can guide Lightning as he is becoming a new leader.  Doc teaches him about strategy, patience and integrity.

Effective leaders empower others instead of dominating for personal gain.  Leadership is not merely about speed, victory or individual accolades but instead about influence, listening, mentorship and moral responsibility.
