To me, Jasmine is a different kind of princess.  Jasmine is the first to represent a non-Western culture as the Princess of the Agrabah and gives diversity to the typical Disney Princess.   She is also one of the first to have a rebellious and independent personality along with great combat skills.

Jasmine wants to make her own choices and not live by the “expectations” of her royal status.  She wants to marry for love rather than obligation which really highlights her independence and need for personal freedom.  Jasmine also wants a relationship with Aladdin that is based on mutual respect which emphasizes the importance of love and equality in relationships.

Jasmine also is a bit of a more “complex” princess and her character develops which shows her to be more empowered and modern than our typical princess. She stands up for herself and her beliefs which demonstrates strength and resilience.  Jasmine values her freedom and independence and refuses to marry just to meet expectations.  She makes her own choice and stands up for what she believes in.

My lesson(s):  I have two that are important to me when it comes to Jasmine.  First is that true love is more important than anything else and second is that we should always be authentic and true to ourselves and not change to fit the expectations of others.
