Sleeping Beauty is how we all know her, but her real name is Aurora.  Sleeping Beauty sleeps through most of the movie but is also a princess who was cursed by an evil fairy to sleep for a hundred years.

The curse from the evil fairy is triggered by a spindle on which she pricks her finger.  The only way to break the curse is by the kiss of a prince.  We have three good fairies who lead the prince to her for the kiss that she needs to awaken.

Innocence and purity are main themes since that is who she is before she is put under the spell.  Sleeping Beauty must also make a transformation in order to break the spell and awaken.  One of the main things that we learn is that the power of true love can overcome anything.  When the prince kisses her and awakens her, it is immediately true love.

Another morale is that good will always triumph over evil.  Despite the curse, good ultimately prevails and the kingdom is restored to happiness.  Fate is also a significant theme since it ultimately determines the outcome of the journey for Sleeping Beauty.  And finally there is an important theme of patience and hope.  Even in difficult times, if we remain patient and continue to be resilient, we will persevere.

I think one of the other important things in the story of Sleeping Beauty is that there is a lot of symbolism that reinforces the themes.  The spinning wheel is a symbol of fate and destiny and the enchanted forest is a symbol of protection and safety.  The final theme is the prince’s battel with the dragon as that symbolizes courage and determination that he must overcome to rescue the princess.

My lesson:  Love, goodness and resilience…themes to live by.
