In this week’s Random Thoughts, I felt the need to write about Accelerate Action which is the theme for International Women’s Day which is coming up on Saturday, March 8th. I love the theme but what does it really mean?
Focusing on the need to Accelerate Action emphasizes the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality. It calls for increased momentum and urgency in addressing the systemic barriers and biases that women face, both in personal and professional spheres.
Each year when they create a theme the messaging is to share knowledge and encouragement with others. The focus is also to inspire momentum for change, I think that continues to be important particularly when it comes to younger women and girls who will join the workforce in the coming years.
Some of the items that stood out to me have to do with supporting women and girls into leadership, decision-making, business and STEM. There have also been many studies about how women leaders increase productivity, enhance collaboration, inspire organizational dedication and improve fairness.
If we want to elevate women to reach a 50% of women at management levels globally, we will need strong mentorship and leadership programs in place. Here are two examples that I found of companies that have put programs in place to help women reach their dreams! Goldman Sachs, through its “10,000 Women” initiative, provides women entrepreneurs with access to business education, capital, and mentorship to grow their businesses. Deloitte runs the “Women@Deloitte” program, focusing on mentorship, leadership development, and advancing women to senior roles within the company.
Another area where they want to see an increase is in sports. Nike’s commitment to women athletes has seen the company increase sponsorships and media visibility for women athletes to promote gender equity in sports. The Women’s Sports Foundation, founded by Billie Jean King, advocates for gender equity in sports and provides funding and support for girls and women athletes.
These are just some ideas that we can work on together to Accelerate Action! Every little step counts! Wishing you a wonderful International Women’s Day 2025!!
