Are emotions important when it comes to our success? Emotions play an important role in how you think and behave and can come in many forms as they can be the annoyance you have with a co-worker which is typically short-lived or more long-lasting like when you have sadness over the loss of a relationship. Old fashioned thinking was that business is “not personal,” but for anyone who owns or has owned a business, this is certainly not true at all, and what’s more personal than emotion?
Emotions play such an important role in communication. Emotional awareness helps us understand the feelings of others and how they influence our communications with them. Emotions also help to enhance our message, convey authenticity, and develop trust with each other.
I am definitely an emotional person, and my facial expressions also tell a LOT about what I am thinking, just ask my husband! And I am not a person who easily hides my emotions. But by tuning into my emotions, I know that I become more self-aware and more mindful which helps me respond to situations more effectively. Emotions also make me act on and influence decisions I am trying to make.
Did you know that 90% of the decisions we make are emotionally based? So, what this means to us is that we make decisions based on feelings instead of logic. Our conscious mind will always make up reasons to justify our unconscious decisions.
So now that I have given you the “science” behind this…remember that it is ok to let your emotions show through. I have often said that when I am facing a difficult decision that “I go with my gut” but this is really my emotion driving my decision. Don’t fight it, remember that “We are persuaded by reason, but we are moved by emotion”!
